Welcome to the website for the Tennessee Psychiatric Association. The Tennessee Psychiatric Association was established in 1958 as a district branch of the American Psychiatric Association and is incorporated as a non-profit organization.
We are a statewide medical specialty organization with more than 300 board members who are dedicated to developing the highest quality of comprehensive psychiatric care for patients, families, and communities.
Through advocacy, education and career development, the Tennessee Psychiatric Association works to protect both the profession and mental health patients throughout the state.

I will be meeting with the Commissioner of Mental Health for the State of Tennessee in October. I believe one of the issues he is interested in is scope of practice regarding Advanced Practice Nurses. My take is that the Psychiatrist should remain the leader of the treatment team, and providers with less training should remain supervised. I think the state is interested in changing the law to allow NP’s to be the second signature on Commitments to the State Hospitals. We have previously opposed this, however, I want to make sure this is the prevailing thought among our membership. I am seeking feedback from the membership to help guide our discussion.
I would also like to hear about any other practice issues Psychiatrists in Tennessee are dealing with. I know some are having trouble with BCBS and reimbursement for psychotherapy sessions where the start and stop times are not clearly documented. We are trying to forward these issues to the APA to gather evidence of restrictive practices with regard to Parity of Mental Health Coverage. Please respond to Shawndell Miller at email@example.com with any questions or comments.
Thank you for your participation. Your Executive Council is trying to build this organization into a functioning and meaningful entity. With our partnership with MHA, we hope we are moving forward. If you are in the Knoxville area next week, please consider attending our reception at the Holiday Inn World’s Fair on Thursday evening. Let Shawndell know if you can attend. We are planning meetings or receptions in other areas of the state over the next several months. Information will be forthcoming.
